Meghalaya, often referred to as the “Abode of Clouds,” is a northeastern state in India known for its breathtaking landscapes, lush greenery, and vibrant culture. The state is home to stunning hills, cascading waterfalls, and unique living root bridges.
Highlights:
- Living Root Bridges: Meghalaya is famous for its living root bridges, especially the Double Decker Root Bridge and the Single Decker Root Bridge in Cherrapunji. These bridges are handmade from the aerial roots of rubber fig trees and are a unique example of bioengineering.
- Cherrapunji and Mawsynram: These places are known for receiving some of the highest rainfall in the world, creating lush green landscapes, deep gorges, and numerous waterfalls.
- Umiam Lake: Also known as Barapani, Umiam Lake is a scenic reservoir surrounded by hills. It offers opportunities for boating, kayaking, and enjoying panoramic views of the surroundings.
- Shillong: The capital of Meghalaya, Shillong, is a charming hill station known for its pleasant climate, colonial architecture, and vibrant markets. The city is often referred to as the “Scotland of the East.”
- Elephant Falls: Located near Shillong, Elephant Falls is a three-tiered waterfall surrounded by lush greenery. The falls get their name from an elephant-shaped rock near the falls.
- Mawlynnong: Voted as the cleanest village in Asia, Mawlynnong is known for its well-maintained cleanliness, living root bridges, and the Skywalk, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.
- Dawki and Umngot River: Dawki is famous for the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River. Boating on the Umngot River provides a mesmerizing experience with visibility right down to the riverbed.
